Cockroach Janta Party - What it is and Why it Matters?
For what started as a satire over the comment from CJI (Chief Justice of India) - Justice Surya Kant, no one expected it to hit a nerve with the people that it became a major talking point in current Indian Politics.
CJI recently addressed youth of India as "cockroaches", well to be fair in the broader context - he was calling out the unemployed youth who are creating unnecessary havoc in the systems; and to be again fair - that moment of fit from the CJI was also unnecessary.
Abhijeet Dipke, an Indian student studying in Boston, USA made up a satirical page called CJP - The Cockroach Janta Party taking reference from the current ruling political party in India; BJP - Bhatiya Janta Party.
Little did he know, that it would hit the nerve of people and the instagram page would amass over 20 miliion followers in less than 10 days. What started was a joke, wasn't anymore - And came their first demand - Resignation of Education Minister - Mr. Dharmendra Pradhan.
Why the demand of Education Minister's Resignation?
Well, for starters the CJP was rooted as a GenZ movement due to most of its followers being the newer generation. The major issue these GenZ faced was paper leak of various competitive exams - most notably NEET (medical entrance exams) in 2024 and 2026.
Notable Exam leaks:
NEET UG - 2024 & 2026
UGC-NET - 2024
UPPSC RO/ARO Exam
UP Police Constable Recruitment Exam
REET
CBSE OSM - (Discrepancies in checking)
and many more.
Millions of people were affected with other factors such as a young 17 year kid was able to hack CBSE portal (exposing the vulnerability of student's data) or another kid able to expose how the Exam conduction responsibility was unfairly given to a hyderabad based company COEMPT EDUTEK over TCS.
With such ruckous and surmounting pressure, the Education Minister was to be held accountable and thus the demand - Resignation of Mr. Dharmendra Pradhan on grounds of accountability
Role of Mainstream Media
Another major reason this movement caught pace was unsatisfaction over the mainstream media - who blatantly over the years have failed to raise serious questions to the government and instead have been seen backing them. Often addressed as Godi Media - Paid media to the government.
Naturally, Mainstream media did what it was expected to do - back the government and discredit the movement. They tried to find foreign connections to the movement, terrorist based mindsets, connections to opposition party and what not.
but none of them really debated the question - Why is the Education Minister not held accountable?
One of the major reasons why India ranks 157th in Free Press Index.
From Online to Offline - Protests take center Stage
The founder Abhijeet Dipke, announced that he will be coming to India to make a formal protest about the education issues in the country and the demand of resignation of education minister.
Duly, he arrived in India and staged protests on 6th Jun 2026 being backed by hundreds and thousands of students at Delhi's Jantar Mantar. He got due permission from authorities and the Delhi Police was able to detain miscreants who tried to malign the Peaceful Protests.
More notably, the movement saw the participation of Mr. Sonam Wangchuk - a famed teacher and activists (who also was detained recently on accounts of wrongful allegations of treason). The inclusion of Mr. Wangchuk gave further credibility to the movement.
Although this movement was highly ignored by the main stream media - must have given shocks to the echelons. At this moment, the Education minister has not resigned and the CJP has threatened to take the protests nation wide - what happens next, is only time will tell.
Conspiracy Theories
Various members in the opposition parties argued the swiftness by which the CJP was given the permission to stage protests and how effectively the authorities were able to contain to be peaceful protests.
Whereas the movements organized by opposition has always been involved with use of force and not granting permission to stage protests.
Although there is no question about the authenticity of the CJP movement, there are conspiracy theories suggesting that the government wanted it to happen - so it can act as a pressure valve.
Government knows the growing discontent among the citizens and doesn't want it to blow up like in the nearby countries of Nepal, Bangladesh or Sri Lanka. Allowing the movement would have allowed the mounting pressure to be eased a bit.
What happens next? Time will Tell.
Good thing is - People are exercising their right to question the government and faith in Democracy is restoring, Some but still some citizens are waking up to the reality.
Whether you blindly follow the government or not, this is what Democracy is about - Don't let anyone tell you anything else otherwise.
